The Newfoundland & Labrador Registered Music Teachers' Association (NLRMTA) was incorporated in 1987 as an independent association affiliated with the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Associations (CFMTA). Prior to this, we existed as a chapter of the Nova Scotia RMTA.
The prime mover and founder of our organization, and also its first President, was Cavell Sheppard. Acting on the instigation of Matt Hughes (the Nova Scotian Vice-President) through Dr. D.F. Cook of the MUN School of Music, Cavell set about contacting music teachers. In the beginning there were ten.
The Association is governed by the 1987 Act of Incorporation, our By-Laws, and our Code of Ethics. A Board of Directors is elected from the membership: it consists of the President, the Past President, the President-Elect, the Secretary, the Treasurer, and four Members-at-Large. The term of office extends over two years.
In the years since Cavell gathered together those first teachers the Association has expanded in numbers and become involved in many activities.
There have been many recitals, workshops, competitions, fund-raisers and a miscellany of other undertakings. These undertakings culminated in July 2003 when the (then) NRMTA hosted the National Convention of the CFMTA, called "Come to the Sea in 2003" - a resounding success which saw people from every province in Canada come to our province. The Chair of the organizing Committee was Catherine Cornick. The enormously hard-working Committee consisted of Kathleen Parsons, Barbara Clarke, Joan Woodrow, Cavell Sheppard, and later, Judy Snedden and Heather Shea.
Our recitals over the years have been given by teachers, students, and guest artists, some of the latter of which have been former students Thomas Yee, Lynn Kuo, and Raphael Hoekman who have gone on to become highly successful performers. Our guest artist in 2005 was Averill Baker who, in 2004, was Second Place winner in the prestigious Van Cliburn International Competition for Outstanding Amateurs. She placed second among 70 Finalists.
Of the many workshops offered to us, some have been given by our own members, others by people such as Clark Ross, Clifford Crawley, and Mary O'Keefe.
For the past fifteen years we have been fortunate to benefit from the expertise of members of the Faculty of MUN School of Music. Initiated by Dr. Maureen Volk, Master Classes have been given to selected senior students by faculty such as Dr. Volk, Timothy Steeves, Dr. Kristina Szuter, Dr. Jane Leibel, and Dr. Caroline Schiller. These Master Classes have been open to teachers and the public for a small fee.
